The Rise of the Author
By: Mark Joyner
I began writing this document intending for it to be 10 pages long in order to provide some background information about why I think the upcoming Simpleology Best-Seller Blueprint is so important (far more important than is immediately apparent).
As I began to write I realized that the underlying issues were so important that I had to expand it to 70+ pages. (My publisher will probably be ticked off I'm giving this away, but well, when you read the document you'll understand the grand irony of it ...)
Don't worry, there is a 60 second Executive Summary and an Immediate Action Plan at the end.
Visit TheRiseofTheAuthor.com to download it now (it's free), but please remember to come back and leave me your comments on it.
Here are a few comments from folks who saw the unedited preview ...

"The Rise of the Author may be the most significant thing
you read this decade." "... mind blowing ..." "Joyner shows us how technology is changing who has the power
- beyond theory - it is indeed a fact that he is correct." |

Oh My GOD! This is amazing stuff.
It's the music industry all over again.
Kudos, Mark, for revealing the truth we've known all along... technology moves everyone forward whether we want to go there or not, and those who capitalize on the momentum in the early stages can reap tremendous rewards.
Note from MJ: Hey Lisa, yep - and we are sitting at the early stage of some pretty amazing stuff right now.
Hi Mark,
You've really done it this time! I recommend that everyone with at least 2 brain cells to rub together read this as soon as possible.
How many people do you predict will actually do so?
Jim
Note from MJ: Hey Jim, well 11,000 so far :-)
"The Rise of the Author" is really about the rise of the average person to become way above average.
Anyone who becomes exposed to this one document will have no choice but to spread their wings or become purposely ignorant, and stay where they are in life.
Today, with the push of a button, I can send my thoughts, promotions or recommendations to thousands of people around the world. Not only that, they've agreed to receive information from me.
When I got the rights back to my book, "How to Take NO For An Answer And Still Succeed," I turned it into an ebook. I added bonuses and other positives to it, including calls, a companion course, etc.
I awoke one morning to find that overnight it had been purchased in Ramat Gan Israel, then 37 minutes later it was also downloaded in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia!
It's no longer who influences others in the world, it's who chooses to do so.
Mark, "The Rise of the Author"is the primer and next step for our individual Nexus' if we so choose.
Thank you!

Note from MJ: Hey Tom, that's a great story. When I built one of my early web properties (the 2nd pay per click search engine on the net), I did it with a friend who is an Indian man who lives in Adelaide Australia - while I was serving as a US Army Artillery officer in Oklahoma. Crazy world.
Joyner you have completely got me in the doghouse now! I received your "rise of the author" email at 10:08 am this morning as I was heading out with the misses for my Saturday "honey-dues". I opened your email and four hours later I have read and re-read this damn document. Talk about mind control. I have no idea where the misses is now as she left without me hours ago. Just wanted to say "thanks".
Note from MJ: Yikes! Please get her some flowers and keep in mind what I said in chapter 8 about speed! ;-)
Congratulations, Mark, what I believe you have achieved with this brilliantly conceived and executed document - and it's something you perhaps failed to do in my previous experience of your work - is make it easily 'accessible' and somehow more 'readable' in a number of ways. In my perception, much of your earlier stuff, at least that which I have read, (no matter how reasoned and articulated)has somehow never tempted me to truly 'grab and devour' it. Previously I would have sniffed around (and, no question, it was obviously good stuff) - but it wasn't "unputdownable".
This definitely is.
I would really appreciate the opportunity of exploring some related opportunities with you outside of this public forum. I see some clear collaboration potential. Please contact me on mwibent@mweb.co.za
Thanks for exposing me to

Mark,
Thanks for the delicious brain fodder.
You've got me racking my brains trying to think of ways to unbind the internet.
Something that came to mind was the story (urban myth?) that the Franco regime had a deliberate policy of moving people from village houses to apartment blocks because it was easier to control them and it destroyed local community spirit.
What we need instead of "apartment block" ISPs is billions of "village house" ISPs.
There's an answer in Heinlein's "Time Enough For Love".
"The Rise of the Author" is pure synchronicity for me because I'm working on a book with a built-in tool that can turn the readers into authors too.
(Not going to give away the farm like you did with your Amazon idea - just whetting your appetite).
Need to redouble my efforts while the Great Window is still open.
Thanks again.
LRS
P.S. My favourite Heinlein quote:
"An elephant is a mouse designed by a committee"
Note from MJ: Hey LRS, you've certainly got my attention!
I have only skimmed through this document and what I have read is both compelling and thought-provoking.
I'm looking forward to reading it in more detail...
thank you Mark

Mark - I understood every written word and felt every emotion you were conveying.
We all know that yesterday's printed news becomes tomorrow's garbage wrapper. Electronic news, however, is there and available forever and a day to be accessed.
Authors have the same life-span opportunity with their digital books and should be taking more advantage of this fact.
Thank you for sharing your 'look' through The Great Window. I likened it to gazing into a crystal ball but without the smoke and mirrors for effect.
You couldn't have made it any clearer for me and have strengthened my resolve to persevere in my goal to becoming a #1 Best Selling Author. I have written the book already, now it's just a matter of 'getting it out there.'
Kind regards and thanks once again for your input towards MY future.
Aussie John
Note from MJ: Hey John, the beauty is that you have the tools right in front of you and freely available to get it out there now. It's truly a time of great opportunity for us.
You have heard it said that there are tree types of people ...
1. Those who make things happen,
2. Those who see and understand what's happening, and
3. Those who wonder what happened!
To stay out of the third category, Mark's new eBook is critical!
This information explains forces that are changing our world - forces that we all do well to understand.

Awesome stuff Mark and a proper call to action. I read your whole e-book in one sitting and was blown away by the knowledge and truly feel like everything I am learning about the nature of reality, capitalism, government, freedom and technology is truly coming together. Your shared information is invaluable and I will be passing it on to my contact lists right away. I am inspired to carry on at full speed with the 3 books I am writing. I have also ordered all of the writings you recommend with great interest. Many thanks for the enlightenment and sound knowledge.
Johnny at www.coachyourlife.co.uk
Note from MJ: Hey Johnny, full speed ahead!
Mark, your document was enlightening and conveyed a sense of urgency that has definitely "lit a fire under me". Having said that, I have to admit I've had many a fire lit under me before - with only toasty buns to show for it! It's interesting for me, however, that your inclusion of the "Mind Control 101" section and my reading it within the context of this document was perhaps serendipitous as I received it on a more personal level. Today I realized that I have been the person referenced in your Solomon Asch quote. I am one who "construed their difference from the majority as a sign of some general deficiency in themselves, which at all costs they must hide". Since that lie has now moved onto the "radar screen" of my conscious awareness, I'm prepared to challenge it. Thank you.
Note from MJ: Anonymous: you've hit the nail right on the head. "The masses" have been very wrong about things from time to time. Agreeing with them as a virtue isn't such a great idea.
Mark, I opened this document last night and didn't put it down until I had finished! My family gave up trying to get my attention as I just put the headphones on and cranked up the music as I read!
This is some very powerful stuff. I have my book both written with others in my head. You have really lit the fire under my derriere to get published before my window of opportunity vanishes.
Although I hope for the betterment of mankind, this ability to decentralize with little government control is truly amazing and perhaps too good to be true. It can't happen forever, because the elitist must have control.
Thanks for all your good work.

Thanks Mark,
As a publishing Coach and while I was off-line in hospital, I was considering the future for publishing so I would help the new authors. I will read this very carefully and see if my ideas of the future match yours.

Note from MJ: It's so great that you used the time in the hospital to plot and plan. Many would flip on the tube and feel sorry for themselves.
Interesting concepts! I now see how all three forces of the Nexus have opened this double window opportunity. To me though the bigger concern is the validity the messages being conveyed by authors and their ability to cut through the clutter. I'm wondering if the danger isn't so much with a centralizing power limiting access to technology (i.e., information)..it would be too obvious to quash this now..., but the danger might be more about a centralizing power infilitrating an apparently decentralized system with information that discredits, distracts, or disinforms in a way that trust and interest is lost to the point where the more informed voices aren't being heard or recognized. To me it's about having an educated, informed, and empowered community first. Governments might have more to gain by keeping the system decentralized, that way they can better monitor and possibly counteract any unwanted sentiments. Just a thought.
Note from MJ: Hey Helen, great conversation with you this morning. You're totally right that even in a decentralized communication medium there are those that will attempt to control it by manipulating the message. You're absolutely right that we need to keep people educated about these methods. Further, I think we need to use technology to make the dynamics that generate greed obsolete. (see my "Constructs" for more info on that)
Mr. Joyner is a consumate strategist and an enlightened futurist. This content is thought provoking and would definitely have been banned by King Henry. Unfortunately, the absolute monarchs of our age prefer to remain well hidden and I'm sure they've got the means of hijacking this new little freedom turf as soon as it will suit them. Don't forget Machiavelli!
Note from MJ: Hey Joe, what if we made it so Machiavelli no longer had anything to gain by controlling people?
Hi Mark
As I read the rise of the Author I come across 2 interesting articles...Blue ray is now taking over from HD DVD and ebooks are being popularised by major publishing houses...examples of exploiting technology binds?...This report gives an accelerated learning into how to exploit modern trends in technology-and how this can be achieved by almost anyone on this planet..I have never heard/read anything that so elegantly explains the changing plane of modern communication....Your many years of knowledge and experience shine through..
Note from MJ: George, you're spot on. The Blue Ray/HD DVD battle was exactly one of Technology Bind exploitation. In this case, they were trying to create a bind by becoming the platform of choice - much like the beta/VHS battle. Except in this case there wasn't even any qualitative difference between the two. It was purely a battle of dominance.
The Birth of Authenticity: Heros by Design
Thanks for taking the time to share your keen insights and observations. I got so much value from this report, I could write two trilogies on the ideas alone :) but I realize this is a blog post, so I will focus on some key points that had the greatest overall impact.
Authentic-adj. conforming to fact and therefore worthy of belief. The quality of being believable or trustworthy.
I wanted to share about the power that being self-aware (Knowledge) working in conjunction with Means (Vehicle, Resource), and the Will to act have in determing the direction of our destiny.
Your book Simpleology and this report really helps an individual to search within and identify areas of perspective and belief that may be preventing them from getting the results they desire in life.
Wow...there is so much more I would like to share concerning this, but I'll keep it brief.
"Science is by nature a flexible tool that allows our body of knowledge to change as we make new observations and new distinctions." Mark Joyner
I am a proponent of "structural decentralization." As stated in your report, individuals can and have attempted to exploit or create technology binds "purely" for the purpose of coercion, influence or securing long-term profit centers regardless of the cost. I see this not only in the areas of "technology" per say, but in the marketplace.
In Simpleology you discussed the power of the mental model. "If you control a person's mental model, you control the person." I see a person's mental model as analogous to a "Technology Bind."
There are many a peddler in the marketplace who would design their marketing and sales message in such a way that would seek out certain individuals functioning from a certain model of the world or to create a model to their advantage, develop little mini-centralized empires where currency is King with little regard for the clients best interests or they are simply ignorant of what their clients really need within the context of their lives and businesses timebound.
People go into business to make a profit and they develop a product or service that they truly fell will meet their client's needs. But guess who determines what their client needs?..The client.
The client seeks the marketer of a product or service out on the internet or some other form of media to find a solution to their problems in life or business....
People that are seeking money making opportunities are often in debt or keeping their heads above water attempting to create a second income to sustain themselves and their families. In desperation, they fall for just about any marketing scheme whether well intentioned or not just to make ends meet. You see this trend, also, in the personal development industry. (Reference page 56) from Simpleology to illustrate this point----no pun intended.
98% of small businesses fail in the first 3-5years and there is an even greater attrition in the world of internet marketing.
This trend creates a pattern of cynicism and a lack of trust in marketers, regardless of the industry, but is it really necessarily a problem of the marketer, business owner, product, or service?
10% of our behaviors and the decisions we make are conscious, while the other 90% are unconscious. Individuals are making decisions based on the miscellaneous programs running in the back of their minds while marketers are strategically coming up with ways ot get their business and loyalty whether the product or service is appropriate to their situation or not. There is an insidious oscillation of sorts that takes place at this point. It becomes even wilder when the individual starts getting offers from a variety of sources promising to solve other problems and fill in blanks that, perhaps, the original offering did not provide.
People are, indeed, overstimulated, Mark, and as more authors spring into existence, the more difficult it will be discern the wheat from the chaff. Then again, what may be chaff to one could be wheat for another?
Knowledge, Means, and Will must be at work symbiotically to maximize the opportunity to succeed in any endeavor.
You know....whenever someone uses the quote "If you always do what you've always done, you will always get what you've always got!" I feel a bit antagonized.
An individual can change his/her behaviors, strategies, and systems to the nth degree, but will get the same results if they are still functioning with the same paradigms they started out with.
The fact of the matter is, most people aren't even aware of what subconscious programing is guiding their behavior (lack knowledge) and those that are aren't using the appropriate Means to get from desire to result or lack the focus to get there...and sadly still many don't have the Will to act. There are many variables that affect our results and from a variety of contexts.
I like this quote a lot better:
"If I continue to do what I've done, I can predict what I will get." Sean McPheat
This quote carrys the same underlying message but with a spirit of hope and personal responsibility. This applys whether results are satisfactory or stellar. It puts the power back into our hands. It changes the perspective from what you do to how you think and design your life. From product to process orientation......
More on that in another blog.:)
I have so much to share! You will be hearing from me again soon! Thanks again for the wonderful report and great book!
In the executive summary portion, you asked the question." What will replace the Print Author, in terms of notoriety and prestige? Rising Authors will become Heros by Design.
"In a world that is trying to slam everyone down to commodity and marginalized status, you have to draw a line in the and distinguish yourself....you have the responsibility and the obligation to counsel those people in what in their best interest. To give them their best short and long outcome." Jay Abraham--Strategy of Preemiinence.
It also helps to love God and love yourself unconditionally. I know this sounds kinda pseudo-scientific....well actually it is a faith based concept.
It makes it easier to love other people. Then you will practice the strategy of preeminence on autopilot. :)
Thanks again, Mark! This report is a jewel!
Warmest and Best,
Natascha
Note from MJ: Hey Natascha, with comments like those, you're welcome here any time :-) You're sure right that if someone is unaware of, or simply unable to control, the processes that are determining their lives it's not quite fair to blame it on them. I imagine someone living in North Korea would have a much more difficult time trying to become a billionaire than one in the US or New Zealand.
Thanks Mark. I've printed out your book. I expect it to be very eductional and interesting.
well mark..you've really done it this time..
ever since i was a child fear was never far from my side..
some things became clear to me when reading 1984 by george orwell in school...but the dots just didn't join still..i was never any good with tech stuff...i was always thinking...why use a word processor...why can't we just dictate it to the machine..
likewise i was thinking if we could just speak to the machines it'd be a lot more easy...hey we could even program the machines to feel emotions and to properly react on our own emotions...what i mean is user friendliness...with nanotechnology on the rise we'll be able to connect to external devices - computers from the quantum era...and not only will we communicate with the machines through means of speech (even informal chit chat relieving us from the alienation between individuals wich will occur when there are too many techie binds to exploit..)
we will communicate with the machines by just relaxation training followed by thought powered applications..
it does and will require some training...but if you want proof just google for mind powered airplane and see what comes up...also mind powered artificial arms and legs are actually examples that found their way onto consumership so that will mean we will still need ONE unbound, one way/two way direct or delayed individual, mass and human to machine one way/two way communication...we'll finally all have a robot that mobs the floor AND relieves us from our utter loneliness...but we'll still be dependant of the creator and manufacturer of the ONE device...one bind, that binds machines to humans and this device will be the quantum puter...way cool...combine that with nanotech and we will just have a nanobot injected which will take care of communication...but who wonly thing is...we gonna need clean nuclear fusion enrgy and currecntly the united nations have rejected the proposal to use nuclear fusion technology for energy distribution...the reason for this is that the walls of the current reactors break apart piece by piece from the H - atoms that bounce against the walls of the reactors and renders it useless within 5 years...so the solution to this is to use H3 - molecules instead...the problem is that there is very little to no H3 on earth...there is some available in old nuclear warheads from the cold war era...but that's maybe just enough to do some experiments but the solution to the H3 scarcity is to get it on the moon where there's an abundance of the stuff that will give everyone on earth enough energy to last ten lifetimes with maybe the single implant of a chip in the house wall or in your clothes to give you heated clothing or anything you want energywise....that's why we have to be on the moon by 2011...aside from the scientists' objections to not exploit other planets and moons (that's just centralisation all over again), in which they strongly resent exploitation of the moon before it is proven that it is safe for us humans on earth and for the cosmic ecology...we really need to make an ecology shift right here on earth or we lose everything from whales elephants to forests and eventually we'll be stuck here with no water to drink and no air to breath...so i suggest we just take a couple batches of H3 from the moon just to tackle the ecology problem here on earth...
please get in touch with the nice people at NASA or the jet propulsion laboratory and tell them that carl sagan inspired me years ago to write what i've written in this very post...i hope that is a valid answer to your call on us readers to provide an answer to your problem on how to solve technology binds' exploitation
with my very warm regards
betty donelly
Note from MJ: Betty, your bandwidth is dizzying. You should write sci-fi.
hi
i would like to get this off my chest and comment on something natascha said...when i read it i could read on until i posted this comment so here goes..
you speak of structural decentralisation...i think the word structure in this domain means even more binds! because structure can be built top to bottom (like carving something out of stone) or bottom to top...and that's were we have these techie binds again...see what i mean?when you start from scratch you are going to fuse two elements or more thus creating binds...i prefer carving out as a method of strucured decentralisation or even better...i would use what i call...organic decentralisation...with minimum to no structure at all...but if you'd translate it to interhuman connections...i mean be creative...the sky is the limit...you can have one on one relations that can go very deep and insightfull and there's mass communication (be it one way or two way) that is completely worthless and anything in between....
there...i got that off my chest and will continue reading your post natascha

Mahalo Mark from Maui Hawaii! This document that you have gifted to the world community has educated me in a most profound way. I feel like a Red Fox after a spring rain, up on my haunches ears and nose to the wind.

Note from MJ: Hey Terence, show me how to bottle that spring rain feeling and I'll go in halves with you on the merchandising.
Mark, I just want to thank you for all the time you put into this report and everything you have given us. I feel privileged to have come across Simpleology by accident. Keep it coming. There is nothing, that you provide, that I haven't found useful and I can't seem to get enough.
This may just be the kick in the pants I need.
thanks
Pam, Vic Australia
Note from MJ: Hey Pam, thanks! Kicks-in-the-pants-R-us :-)
Thanx so much, Mark, for the book (free). Couldn't have afforded it otherwise. Sorry you had to send a reminder to return to this page. I stayed up late that night reading it - it was good. I am a veritable baboon from the woods, but got into the computer world 2-3 years ago, as a bad wreck ruined my health for some time. In that 2-3 years I have recognized all these things you've brought out in the book, and have felt so greatly agitated to get into the drift, but money and ignorance have forbidden me. I, too, have been amazed that the freedom has been anywhere near this extensive, and believe it to be of numbered days. But I would deeply desire to be able to use what I could while it lasts, if I could learn fast enough; but, again, have no money even for lessons. So: Your book only serves to agitate that agitation to a much greater degree. ... I really do add my prayers to your calling for the freedom-loving folks out there to challenge their finest, and as yet undeveloped capacities to find that factor that can permanently unbind all the world of the web. But I, too, have other beliefs...
Note from MJ: Hey Linda, in the army we used to advise soldiers to be the best at whatever job is given them. I guess mine today is "agitator" :-)
Wow Mark, this is spine tingling stuff! I hadn't intended to post a video to join the competition, being shy and all, but after reading the thing, I just might! I hadn't thought about actually putting something into real print before, but now? Who knows.
Whatever, the future is an exciting prospect, and I am thrilled to be on the leading edge! Thanks for all your insights and the knowledge you freely pass on, hopefully enough right minds will hear it!
cheers from Oz :-)
Note from MJ: Hey Teresa, I bet there are quite a few people far less qualified than you who have had best-sellers. You in print? Why the heck not?
Mark, as I read this report, I kept recalling parts of the long conversation we had at Singapore last year - and many things you said then came alive in a different sense in different parts of "The Rise of the Author".
Interesting perspectives that go far beyond just authoring books. I read it late at night, and will have to re-read it again to get the most from your vast and rich experience.
Thank you for sharing those gems. Hope to run into you again sometime to chat about this further - maybe at Bali? :)
All success
Dr.Mani
Note from MJ: Hey Mani, a meeting with you is always most welcome :-) Something happening in Bali? I love it there. Try to go to the neighboring island of Lombok if you want to get away from the commercialism. When I was there 15 years ago there were quite a few totally unspoiled beaches.
Right on the "money" Can't wait for the new Blueprint next week! Do we get it sooner in the Southern Hemisphere?!
Note from MJ: Hey Jeff, ozzies and kiwis sadly get it a day later - since we're across the dateline ;-) Seriously, it's a good thing - when we launch it will be evening in the states and day time for us.
Please read and don't judge me tooooo soon but I believe that the longest bind was religion(by the way I'm a religious man myself), all the religions were used as binds. Then lucky for us the advent of the printing press started to unbind....although the bible has been the most printed book in history... I digress...sorry. Eventually the last unbinding ofcourse is the INTERNET thank goodness. I believe firstly in god, and being good to my neighbour. This all is surrounded in FREE choice, but those choices need to be good...which I can't say has been the case. So to my point...I believe that the next bind will be religion and not in a good way as all binds tend to be.... but I think it's been around for a very long while and it's not sooo obvious. It's not Christianity, not Hindu, not muslum (sorry about my spelling), not Tom Cruises group ..... in fact it's right in front of all of us and it's affecting every single person we know.... and it's affecting YOU and you don't realize it and if you did then you should be shouting it from the roof top. Like the "The Rise of the Author", we have been the test case dummies for a very very long time. In fact, I bet everyone reading this has worshipped at the alta at least once or twice... I've done so once today but I had to, that's the thing... we have noooo choice but to worship!! I don't want to sound like an expert or someone in the know...but I know what worshipping is... and that my friends is the next BIND. It's too late!! I don't know how we can get out of it.. the only thing is technology to catch up but this is huge.
Anyway, I'm not going to preach anymore until we are openned minded enough to be or live unbound and the internet may not be enough to achieve this state because of the two restrictions. The only solution I can think of is if we start an election type process for the person who most stood for what we all think and believe in, which is UNBINDING the world. Perhap that guy who owns FACE BOOK... although too young. What about Mark? Anyway this person will then be the voice for all .......just a thought!
Anyhow the next religion is ..... GLOBAL WARMING and all that that entails... ozone whole, recycling, CO2 emmissions, deforrestation etc etc etc etc. What's do you think?
PC
Note from MJ: If I ran for office I'd have to use what George Clooney said his platform would be: the "yep, it's true I did that" platform. I wouldn't want to subject my life to the scrutiny and inhuman behavioral standards to which we subject our politicians. And I think we can solve these problems without the government. Why not take matters into our own hands rather than wait for the election that may never happen?
Hi Mark,
After reading ROTA I just had to make contact with you.....tried but it's not easy sometimes and no blame on you.
ROTA put me in a trance I still have not climbed out from. I have been on a book/s writing journey for almost 13 years now. But last year I got lucky. I signed up with David Hancock and my first book with him, Sensational Smiles, is in the pre-release stage, is on his website at www.morganjamespublishing.com and also is at pre-release discounted price on Amazon.
Ben Mack and Joel Comm have referred to "Brush Your Teeth" in more than one email inferring it's something you do automatically, without having to think. I'm sorry mate BYT is a 5 Century old tooth cleaning instruction, not fit to be used in this 21st Century! It is a CAUSE of oral diseases and should be banished
Sensational Smiles has a release date of 01 May 2008 and will put people on a path of oral health, oral diseqase free, for the rest of their lives.
Sensational Smiles also has a petition, The Sensational Smiles Petition which is all about making it mandatory to give children an oral health education based on my oral hygiene instruction, Treat Your Whole Mouth.
Mark I would love to get to talk to you so I can make best use of days from now to 01 May 2008.
I love talking philosophy too.
Note from MJ: Hey Garth, if what you say is true it's a huge message. Why not get it out there with a free report that leads in to the sale of your book? You have a huge believability mountain to climb, though. Many will question what you say given that the dental community is saying otherwise. Not knowing what your message is backed up with (are there any studies done?) I can't comment one way or another, but I can say if (very important "if"!) the real proof is there and the truth is on your side it's a battle worth fighting.
Fascinating stuff. It's often noted that the publishing business model - with its high production costs and stock returns policy - is disastrous. How long can it survive in its current form?
The problem still remains though of how to get published? An awful lot of books are published each year (one wonders how sometimes), but many more are rejected, and not always because they're badly written or don't have a potential market.
So is the route to release an e-book and do all the marketing to drive website traffic first, then once you've built that platform to 'flip' it to a traditional publisher?
Thanks for all your insights,
Paul, Spain
Note from MJ: Hey Paul, you can do both. You can get in print and lower the initial cost by using a POD (print on demand) model. In fact, if you build your relationships properly you don't even need to have your own list fully developed. Yes, it sure helps to have a list, but I know of many who have started with nothing, and made it big simply by making it beneficial for others to promote them. You can move a lot faster than you might think. I'd develop a "bias for action" - do things now rather than wait until something else happens first.
Mark, I read your report this Saturday, and found the understanding of decentralization versus centralization of power a rallying point for understanding many things. Also your report carried within it an attitude of ability and personal power without actually presenting it. It had an effect on me.
The following day, my companion was unhappy with the lack of results in our attempt to sell a home we have remodeled in Anchorage Alaska as a FSBO (For sale by owner) We have been unable to let buyers know its availability as well as a real estate agent can.
Your article triggered an idea which I have just finished implementing. Real estate agents have a centralization of power in the real estate market. I can not freely contract with who I choose to sell my home. Either alone or with agents.
Since I am a newbie in internet marketing but intend to persist to success I thought why not apply the power of the internet towards the sale.
I talked with a real estate broker who told me it was illegal for non RE agents to help sell my property.
Using again the internet to read the real estate laws: I learned that casual communication, and passing information was in fact not illegal. The internet could work legally. More about the laws is on my site.
I am now offering a reward for any person who emailed a person who becomes the buyer$500 and a second level of emailing person who emails to actual buyer $250.
I believe this is the first time anyone has done this. It would be a great benefit to other FSBO sellers. And effortless for those that do a lot of searching to advise by email.
It another in so many ways that the internet is provides freedom and erodes the centralized power of a previously dominating group.
The idea is more developed on website: www.swamibargains.com and who knows some reader may just know this is perfect for someone they know. It allows the magic of coincidence.
Thank You Mark for your knowledge, sharing and magical spirit you were a trigger for me and this project.
Daniel
Note from MJ: Hey Daniel, given the "dodgy dealings" I've recently seen in the Auckland property market (I watched an auction that I'm pretty sure was staged, for example), I'd say real estate is a field ripe for decentralization. Check with your lawyer on the legality of what you're doing, and remember that those who are benefiting from the way things are will tell you alternatives won't work for one reason or another.
Wow I am just blown away. I've been up half the night, I just couldn't stop reading. With my busy schedule I will have to create a way to make that video of the most life changing event in my life. No book has ever made me feel so motivated or driven. I hope this lasts.
I am in the middle of creating a web presense on the internet, so that I can secure aggreements with products suppliers to start an immediate income, and I have been writing all along. There is much more to come from me! What perfect timing this inspirational teaching has for me personally. Thank you Thank you!
Note from MJ: Hey Carrie, great! Use that motivation now to get the ball rolling intensely. Sometimes when you get momentum on something it's hard to even stop yourself.
Mark,
Your Rise of the Author document is EXCITING, appealing, clear and VERY hypnotic to read.
I'm definitely hungry for MORE !
So, will I become the next best-selling author ?
I don't know about being the NEXT one, but I'll get there !
I'm pretty sure that I've got what it takes ...
Here's what Joe Vitale says about me.
"Elinor. You're an amazing woman. Very impressive.
Creative and daring and outrageous.
Persistent, too. :) "
What do you think ?
Check it out ...

Note from MJ: If my boy Joe says you're persistent, then you must be VERY persistent ;-) Combine that persistence with a good plan and you'll be unstoppable.
I enjoyed the read and like many of the readers here, read it in one sitting. I do not consider myself an author of books but I do respect the power books have to influence.
I am however, the Author of my own life, my future, how it plays out, and how I touch the people of this world during my journey. I am a christian but do not consider this relationship as "binding" because it is all about choice.
My back ground is High Tech. Six years in US Navy and 11 years with a large Aerospace Company as an Engineer. I'm sure many readers of your book were shocked or enlightened by the studies and revelation of Government binding and centralization desires.
I can almost guarantee the "device" already exists. Why have they chosen not to use it yet? The reasons are far too many to list here but keep in mind that timing is everything. Can we counter it with technology? Well, yes and no. We have the knowledge/technology but we don't have the will or the means.
I will forward your book to some good-old-boys I know.
Best Wishes
Note from MJ: Hey Connie, I imagine the raw technology to do what is on page 66 is already "out there." Perhaps even in the main stream.
I'll do my best not to repeat that which has already been stated, but I want to add my "kudos" to this blog site. I already wrote 2 comments on Joe Vitale's site, so if some of you have read those, please forgive the repetition, here.
Like many others, I, too, am a writer. I've been looking into various aspects of publication, and I now understand that although publication through a company holds prestigious bragging rights (and a powerful marketing factor), it is no longer the only method of sharing ideas. If one is looking to make a large amount of money, quickly, however, and if one needs the marketing power behind these companies, it is still the primary means to propel an author into fame and fortune. I've also noticed another recent trend. When a well-known author publishes a new book, he/she invites all those others in the public eye (i.e., other best-selling authors) to send emails to their lists, as well, which quickly snowballs into massive sales. Who you know counts!
What is the underlying need behind publication? Ego, money, sharing of knowledge, all of the above? If we are honest, as writers, most of us probably admit it is "all of the above." There once was only one way to become published, and authors gave up their creative process to those whose goal was primarily to make money. That is not a bad thing, but it has often compromised the integrity of the original work. The added dimension of the Internet has opened up a more just route to publication. Looks like we need to move a bit faster, though, doesn't it? I've sent out proposals, but I am not sitting idle, while waiting to hear if anyone is willing to give me the opportunity to be published. I no longer feel I have no control. I understand I have ALL of the control over what happens to me. Nonetheless, not all people believe this. How many have given up on being published after repeated rejections?
Although I was recently told by a published author that only those published by respectable firms are worthy of discussion, I know that isn't true. That was fear of competition speaking. I'm certain many great books have never been published, but that doesn't preclude the book was unworthy of being read.
This article renewed my conviction, so I am grateful for that. Thank you, Mark, for this timely reminder of time. :>
On the challenge given on page 66...I had to do a lot of thinking! I'm still turning this over, in my mind, and plan a conversation around this topic, tonight. I have several family members in the computer business. However, my first thought was how difficult it is to protect...or unbind... anything that is tangible. Our current media transmissions all require a transmission source, and therein lies the problem. Whether we communicate through telephone wires, cables, satellites, computers or other digital devices, all require a physical source for the transmission. If all one has to do to control is to find and bind the source, we will continuously be playing this cat and mouse game, won't we? However, since communication is energy, maybe the only system that is not so easily bound is one found outside particle (physical) form. Of all the posts I've read, so far, I suppose I am closest to agreeing with what Betty Donnely wrote about mind-powered control of machines. I suggest we not look solely at science and technology, but rather, look into metaphysics, as well. Quantum physics could certainly aid in this, but I wonder if we aren't now ready to propel science and technology into the realm of the non-physical. Most of what all "this" is made of is not physical, so why do we limit ourselves by only looking into form? We already know our thoughts are the beginning of form, but what if we left the form as intangible? It would be difficult (although not impossible) to control in non-physical form.
I believe that new technology comes along and serves a purpose for a while, but our need to evolve into grander and greater beings will soon render that one archaic as well. Are we looking for something that will only serve us for a short time, or is our mission even greater? In any case, I know we will invent "the next big thing," as it is our nature to do so. Thinking beyond the Internet...what is next? I rather like the idea it will not involve more machines, but will point in the direction of a higher intelligence that is always available to all. Real freedom is found when we take competiton and control out of the equation, because we understand all of us have constant access to everything.

Note from MJ: Hey Jodi, you're quite right - and at the same time we live in a mechanical world. I think we can take control out of the equation by creating technology that provides for everyone's basic human needs (no, not talking communism here, but something closer to Technocracy). Check out my "constructs" at www.markjoyner.name for the direction I think we need to go. ROTA is a piece of that larger puzzle.
Mark:
ROTA has been a very timely experience. I'm at that proverbial "I have a book in me" time of life, and your information, besides enlightening the "mechanical pathway," certainly also removes much of the psychological barrier to sharing our thoughts...and creating books. My concern however, is that I personally favor memoirs and personal essays. I don't get the sense that this genre is as marketable as "ho-to guides" or fact books. Any thoughts on this?
Note from MJ: Hey Jo, I'd say that some memoirs and personal essays have done very well! Montaigne would have a few things to say about the validity of the essay as a genre. Yes, it's probably much easier to market how-to on one level, but on another a well written memoir or collection of essays that changes lives can do far better in the long run. In recent history many essay collections have done quite well - Chomsky comes to mind. To be sell-able, though, you need a "platform" - that is, you need to be presented as a "someone" who is worthy of delivering a worthy message. That worthiness usually comes from accomplishment. But then, some people base their entire worthiness purely on the act of writing alone. Malcom Gladwell's only qualification as a writer leading up to The Tipping Point was that he was a writer for the New Yorker. Many fiction writers are writers pure and simple. What it really comes down to is your will - do you have the will to make yourself known? If so, go for it.
Got your book and Stephen King's new book the same day. Have studied yours and not opened Mr. King's yet.
Note from MJ: thanks! :-)
Printed and immediately read ROTA Sun 2/17. Loved the journey and look forward to further tracts. Thank you for compiling and publishing this information and your predictions. I have no doubt they are spot on. Personally, it was one of those Aha moments throughout the reading; like when you are on the edge of consciousness and someone puts in print the puzzle that was trying to come together on it's own and then Bam!! There it is. Your willingness to put the information in as many minds as possible very likely creates a leap of collective consciousness hereto fore not seen. It inspires me on both a conscious and uncontentious level to move forward jumping out of the rocking chair of mass mediocrity. Weather this I is the next best selling author or not I am changed.
In Gratitude
Note from MJ: Hey Susan, thanks for the very kind words. I bet you're closer to being the next best-selling author thank you think!
Just what I needed to get back on track.
Just one question? how is language a bond of e-publishing. I see new media (ebooks, Podcasts, and audiobooks) as tools of authors to market and realize their power and ultimately get published on books, but once there only a small part and of them get translated and then only the printed books and not in all markets. It kind of busts the experience.
Example, the movie the Secret. You can get the subtitled movie and the book In spanish. That is basically it. We how get the message keep digging and find new media and published books to take to the next level. Like Joe Vitle's (I was turned to Simpleology by being part of Joe's List)
For us with decent domain of english is fine. But for a big potential market is a dead end. and all of that marketing efforts of Joe's to ride the Secret miss their mark in spanish
In a way I see and interesting thing happening. In my upcoming ebook is kind of Web dependent because reader input math operations are made on the server via PHP inside the PDF or web a link on the Ebook. Even as it could make it to press some day there is an unbreakable synergy between web and printed or e book needed in this new way of publishing. My book will be in spanish for now but if ever translated would need a web back up in the new language. Some how if we had a book called Simpleologia it wouldn't reach its full potential without Simpleologia.com
In the mean time I can only turn perhaps a couple of people to simpleology wile the big power of my word of mouth power is lost in translation.
Here goes to any author out there. Even when you get published. There is a market for ebooks even of published books. in other languages that will never get distributed by the publishing industry and most times not practically accessible by Amazon. As a customer I would buy even at a premium The KEY or Zero Limits (Joe Vitale) in Amazon of Mrfire.com if I could download the book with out the hassle of international shipping and customs.
Note from MJ: Hey Rodrigo, language is definitely a bind, but not a bind we can't get around. My publisher goes out and gets translation deals for me and now I'm in 15 languages. Yes, I doubt I can appreciate the fullness of The Tin Drum or Don Quixote as I don't speak German or Spanish, and I doubt one not fluent in English could really fully get the joy of translated Shakespeare. But these are only binds of our culture that we can at our leisure attempt to get around. it's the binds that are thrust upon us or used to enslave us that have me concerned.
Hi Mark
Thanks for naming your e-book after me....well maybe you didn't on purpose but the universe compelled you to :)
It is a great read,(I sat in a wine bar and drank a bottle of Ruinart Champagne reading it, people thought I was strange but you know me, any excuse for Champagne) even if I am not entirely on board with the domain name side of things....I do fit into the category of having a vested interest however, so I shall not poke my head up too high least the target becomes too appealing to the masses.
We should get together for lunch or dinner soon.(I have stocked up the Champagne cupboard)
Your writing has reminded me that I need to complete my book, and quickly as it has been a project for the last 6 years (you could say I am a tortoise in the speed department). I think Rebecca will love it too as she has been feeling a bit low after a few rejection letters from publishers ...a new perspective from someone she respects may be just the nudge to get her writing again.
Cheers for the great content...

Note from MJ: Hey Terry, sorry I missed the champagne invite :-) Tell Rebecca that many great books have been rejected many times before being recognized as greats. A book called "Ishmael" was turned down dozens of times and then won the Turner Prize and turned into a mega best-seller. Is it "good enough" - well I am still yet to discover the Grand Objective Scale of Goodness that some tend to believe the publishers use to determine whether or not a book is worthy. As Kiyosaki said: best-selling ain't necessarily best-writing.
Mark, thanks for this incredibly well-thought and well-presented report based on broad knowledge, the ability to synthesize it and to look far with great commitment.
I have to write my bestseller yet (I am in the process) and cannot make use of your practical publishing recommendations just yet. But your words are a strong added encouragement for me.
I agree with your "dialectics" of centralisation vs decentralisation, but I also see a negative trend in "total unbinding", i.e. a huge amount of self-seeking trash being published, total egotism, no commitment to any kind of responsibility. There is an underside to what we cherish as the liberating potential of the net as much as there are the opposing forces.
I hope, we all together mind enough to use the window of opportunity, the nexus for the real liberation.
Thanks again, Mark, for your thoughts and your generosity.
Note from MJ: Hey Steffi, you're absolutely right that there will be a lot of "trash" but because that determination is one of taste it would be great if we could make that determination ourselves, rather than have the choice of quality made for us. If a massive influx of junk is the price I have to pay for freedom, then so be it. We can navigate toward the jewels and ignore the trash.
Dear Americans, why are you ever voting for the Republicans? Those are the ones that are causing us all the great trouble and represent main threat to the worlds freedom. They will do everything to control all of us, and bind everything they can, without a doubt. Please think at least twice before you vote!!!! Remember: NO ONE in the rest of the world doesnt want a McCain in power of the world! Mark, thank you for your report, you turned out to be even more of an amazing man, than I thought, and this "warning" is my very first emotional response that comes into my mind after reading it.
Note from MJ: Hi Natasha, thanks for the kind words. Of course I'll have to refrain from commenting on party politics. I'm hoping the message transcends party lines. We can all agree that more freedom is a good thing - as long as we're not intruding on the freedom's of others. Where we all tend to differ is in our opinions of "the how." I say rather than let the politicians decide it, let's decide it by introducing technology that makes it a fait accompli.
Thanks for the INSPIRING feedback, Monsieur Joyner (i.e. "If my boy Joe says you're persistent, then you must be VERY persistent ;-) Combine that persistence with a good plan and you'll be unstoppable.") --
The R.O.T.A. definitely (and very cleverly ! )insinuates that YOU are the man with the (good) plan ... In any case you've definitely got ME hooked on whatever you have to say about that, in the future...
Sincerely
Elinor Barbier
It was so cool to read this information because I've been talking about how digital technology and the "means" to distribute it are changing what will happen to those who create good stuff.
Before I felt like a guy who was crying out in the wilderness. It's nice to know it's being observed by others who can see the potentially huge benefit to creators of information. And not merely the manipulators of it....
Thanks for the ebook,
Tony Funderburk
Mark,
Your ebook inspires me to get my book out and me out of my cave.
It is time.
Thanks for sharing your passion.

The evolutionary result will be telepathic communication. The first quantum leap of the internet will initially occur by means of a micro-chip implanted in our brain. Communication will be broadcast without external hardware, or satellites. The internal- internal system will have the capacity to be "live" and sending, or turned off so we can operate as we do now. Turning it on, we are senders through our thoughts and receivers of what we choose to receive.
Then will come the next Q=leap - telepathic communication. Communication without the micro-chip.
Telepathy is a human capacity normally untouched by everyone but an "awakened" yogi.
If one human has this power, we all have it, we just don't believe in it and so never attempt to access that area of our brain.
If we can leap past the micro-chip stage, we will save ourselves from the threat of the programmer and programming of the micro-chip!
The "new author" has to communicate this future in such a way that fears of this "far out" future are alleviated.
The more humans who are able to access this telepathic ability that is in all of us, the more acceptable and inevitable this future will soon become our present.
Until then......
Mark:
You use the term 'Binds', and Nexus. I refer to what's going on as disintermediation. Where change in technologies trumps entire industries; look at how something as unique as Vonage made the monolith telco industry shudder. Thank you for setting the foundation in your article. This is happening right in front of us and those who take the time to first recognize the magnitude of the changes going on and then leverage the change to their advantage will prosper. The publishing industry and the supply and distribution channels are being dis-intermediated by this change. I will be part of helping that change occur.
I have three 'business plans' that involve the distribution of informtion in three distinct markets on the drawing board right. I own a technology company, and yet I've procrastinated over the 'how' of taking evrything forward. Not any more, not after digesting your article. I'll be in touch shortly. Again, many thanks.

I couldn't take my eyes off my screen. This is an important document - not for the "best-selling author" tip only but for an eye-opening education on how the powers that be use subtle and not-so-subtle means to control us. Thanks for offering this important and timely resource, Mark.
Mark, I've been saying a lot on my "yourbookpublishingcoach blog" and elsewhere that this is the best time to be an Author, IF people are willing to accept the way the world is. Your report explains very well why this is so.
Also, as someone who has been in publishing for nearly 30 years as an Author, editor, and marketer, I am both concerned and breathless about where publishing is headed. It's going to be an interesting ride! Thanks for helping people become aware of the opportunity and the challenges.
The book was well written and explained a few points I did not know like URL names.
The fan story reminded me of my US Army time in Japan and if you put a broom upside down in the corner of a room it was bad luck. My wife needed to have the house owners wife visit less and placed a broom upside down at the front of house and it worked. The lady did not visit anymore.
Hi Mark,
I wanted to provide some clarification in response to Betty's post.
Structure is generally defined as anything composed of parts arranged together in some way. Structure can prevent disorganization or anarchy if utilized in the right context. (Amazon.com example)
Decentralized means to cause to withdraw or disperse from a center of concentration. When I coined the phrase "structured decentralization", it referred to an organizing party creating a space where the individual is not "under the influence" (please refer to theories of authority, conformation in report) and some traditional marketing strategies =) in the decision making process. They have the freedom to choose from a plethoric array of options, preferably from all available options without the distraction of interest conflicts initiated by outside parties. I liked the phrasology you used "organic decentralization." The process of decision becomes in a sense organic by default. Thanks for the feedback and thanks Mark for reading and responding to our posts!
Evolution of concepts is already taking place!
I came up with a completely process-oriented variation on Sean McPheat's quote using the scientific method "If you believe the way you have always believed, you can predict what you will get."
Progress! Talk soon!
Natascha
This has to be the most inspirational book I've read in literally 'years'.
I even feel I've 'poached' it by getting it for free.
It really is another 'milestone' in our mindset for future action.
I'll do my best to encourage as many people as possible to give it a damn good read.
Many thanks,
Pete Moring.
PS. Just a thought here, but doesn't water transmit even faster than air?
And aren't we all mostly water anyway?
Isn't water the largest mass in our atmosphere?
Something to ponder in the 'call-to-action'.
Mark,
When I lived in Daejeon Korea, I had my fan running in my bedroom.
The fan sat six-inches from my face, blowing on me all night long, every night, from late spring until early autumn.
My roomates / co-workers were Korean. They knew about my fan.
They never said a word against it.
In fact, I never heard about this urban legend until I read ROTA this morning.
I got a cold chill running down my spine when I read about that. Here I am six years later, just realizing the very people I lived and worked a year with in that fascinating country had a death wish for me.
It will be a while before I sleep well again.
;)
Nicely done, Mark! What a wonderfully, absorbing read The Rise Of The Author is.
Definitely one of your best writings, and a terrific call to action. Many of the writings I have sitting around are now getting a "dust-off", and revisions for setting them forward to the world.
This has to be the top recommended read for any aspiring author daunted by the mainstream!
Kudos, and keep it up!
Paul Klein
I read Rise of the Author last week (and listened to the webcast about the best-selling blueprint this afternoon). The one word that comes to mind is "hope." I'm about 2/3 through what I hope will be the first of many novels, but have felt that other than writing a wonderful book proposal and praying, there wasn't a lot I could do to help myself succeed. Don't hear me putting down either great book proposals or prayer -- but your document/webcast helped me see how to be more involved in making things happen. Thanks.
Note from MJ: Hey Kathy, you'll remember that quote from my old Battalion Commander: "Hope, Lt. Joyner, is not a course of action." But having a course of action sure seems to give us hope when we have none :-) Please keep posting back with your progress!
Hi Mark,
Read ROTA and was amazed. I first became interested in securing all of the great information to help my boyfriend who has written four books but never been published. I got on the call, listened and learned, purchased all the material and decided to write my own book instead. Thanks for all the great stuff and it is great stuff!
Thanks for sharing!
