By: Grace Cook

Going Unplugged. Aside from saving electricity, you have a shot at saving the earth when you unplug.

If there's anything that Wesley Rice has learned from the Recession-Proof Your Home Strategy Cashmap, it's the fact that little things can add up to a whole lot of savings. He lists his energy saving tricks:

1. Shower Settings. It's best to install a water-saving shower head to reduce the amount of water you are using and energy to heat it.

2. Vampire Stripper. You should take care of "energy vampires" such as televisions, DVD players, and stereos. As long as they're plugged in, these devices use electricity even when you've turned them off. As such, they should be plugged into a smart power strip that will cut the power when they're not in use. These "energy vampires" are said to cost as much as $80 billion of the country's collective yearly domestic energy use.

3. Stove Cooler. If you're using an electric stove, you can turn it off in the last few minutes of your cooking time. The remaining heat will be enough to finish off the dish that you're preparing.

Like Wesley, we can all come up with simple tricks to keep our power bills down. Running a home efficiently includes pinching the pennies in such a way that you or your family hardly feels it.

My favorites for small savings that add up.

CFL light bulbs - they have dropped in price quite a bit and save a ton compared to normal bulbs.

Self pressurizing shower head - I bought mine due to low water pressure but they do a great job of reducing water usage. When taking a hot shower this doubles to reduce electricity as well.

Turn down your water heater- Turn it down to where a full hot shower is not quite hot enough :) Or just learn to take cold showers and you can turn it down much lower.

Thanks, for this TIP! Good advice in this World Recession Times. Keep up the good work!

Great advice. Never thought of the stove one. I am going to start doing that one from now on.
