Some quick back-story...

The Kauffman Foundation was started in the late 1960's by entrepreneur Ewing Kauffman to promote and study entrepreneurship.  The foundation is widely recognized.  They have assets in the billions.  And they are the only such non-profit-organization to focus exclusively on entrepreneurship.

Obviously, a very credible organization.

According to their latest Index of Entrepreneurial Activity (released May 23, 2007) approximately 465,000 NEW businesses are created each month. That statistic only counts the United States. I can only imagine the numbers of new business startups around the globe.

By the way, this number is significantly higher than what the Small Business Administration (SBA)  reports (671,800 total for 2005). But it's interesting to note the SBA defines "small business" as an independent business having fewer than 500 employees. Yep, 500 employees. Do you think a 499 person enterprise is small? Clearly the SBA is out of touch with real small business ...

Okay, lets assume the Kauffman Index is closest to reality.   (I think that number is understated too, but let's just use it for the sake of discussion.)

465,000 new businesses start up every month. That's 5,580,000 startups a year.

Now apply the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics that show 34% fail in less than two years, and 56% fail within 4 years. (I suspect those numbers are way low.)

Let's do the math and take a look at a 2 year slice of time. Out of 11,160,000 new business startups in 2 years, 3,794,400 failed.

Over 4 years 22,320,000 startups... 12,499,200 failures.

Staggering isn't it?

The reality is actually far worse.

What these statistics don't show are the millions upon millions of unregistered one-person operations that start up each year and fail.

The failure rate for those businesses, I suspect, is probably closer to 90% or higher.

It's as if there is some unseen force out there laying waste to new business start-ups.

It's like a cancer, ravaging the dreams of people reaching for the brass ring.

But unlike cancer... it's much easier to cure “sick” small businesses. There's a proven process used by the worlds greatest turnaround artists. The superstars who lead Fortune 500 Companies through stunning transformations. 

Over the last few years, I've seen people getting sucker-punched by the scourge of "easy money" promoters. The myth of overnight business success for the masses has just been shattered. Somebody has to clean up the mess and show the world how to pick up the pieces.

A paint-by-numbers version of big business turnaround tactics - one that didn't require a Harvard MBA - was long overdue.

So the process has to be dissected to the core.

Do you know the difference between strategy and tactics? As a US Army Officer, and cold war veteran of the Military Intellegence Corps, I had to... because the lives of friends and comrades depended on it.

The father of modern strategy, Carl von Clausewitz, defined military strategy as “the employment of battles to gain the end of war.” That means strategy is “big picture.”

On the other hand, tactics are the execution of plans and moving your forces in battle.  Tactics are the “right now picture.”

So clearly you could look at tactics winning battles, and strategies winning wars.

What does that mean for you? Chances are you aren't in the military, but you need to know this...

If you're in a turnaround situation, you are at war.

Right now, the battle for your business  survival is raging on the muddy business battlefield. Whether it lives or dies is up to fast thinking and even faster action. You don't have time to think about the war... if you don't make it through this fierce battle... it's all over.
